Isabelle Valters is a current JDS squad participant and WRTA Junior Competition player at Altona Tennis Club. Despite being just nine years old, Isabelle has won several JDS tournaments already. We spoke with Isabelle about her tennis journey so far and her plans for the future.
Why did you start playing tennis?
I liked playing totem tennis and ball games around the house when I was 2 or 3 years old. I was intrigued by tennis and really enjoyed it so I started participating in lessons.
What do you enjoy most about tennis?
I really enjoy meeting new people and making new friends while playing tennis. The sport just makes me happy when I play, and I also enjoy testing different strategies out against different opponents.
What other sports do you play apart from tennis?
At the moment I play tennis 3 days per week, but I also do taekwondo and swimming, and I also used to play basketball.
How have you found the JDS squads at Altona Tennis Club?
The squads are really fun, I like working together with other players whilst doing drills and playing matches. Mark and the other coaches make all of the squads enjoyable and interesting.
What have been some of your tournament results so far?
I have played at lots of different JDS tournaments such as Melbourne Park, Hume, Saltwater and Altona. I won the JDS Elimination Final tournament at Hume and won an entry into the JT Bronze tournament at Hume during the July school holidays which was a fun experience.
What advice would you give someone who is just starting tournaments?
The advice that I would give someone is to never give up even if you are losing, and to never be afraid to ask a question if you’re unsure about something. I would also tell people to bring a spare racket just in case their string breaks!
Do you have any tennis related goals for the future?
I would like to become a professional tennis player but I know that will take a lot of hard work. For now I would just like to improve on my technique and enjoy playing. I also really like the quote “when you do what you love you never work a day in your life” and I feel that applies to me when I play tennis.
